Pura Vida is a bracelet company that was founded by Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman during a graduation trip to Costa Rica in 2010. Thall and Goodman met local artisans Jorge and Juaquin who were creating and selling bracelets on the beach. Pura Vida was a movement created to celebrate the simple things in life. Pura Vida translates to “Pure Life” in English. Over the years, Pura Vida has grown significantly and has even opened up storefronts in recent years. When Pura Vida was opening up storefront locations at the UTC mall in La Jolla and The Camarillo Outlets in Ventura County, I applied to join the Pura Vida Brand Ambassador Program in January 2023. After two years as a Pura Vida Brand Ambassador, I am finally calling it quits, but all for good reasons.
Companies often recruit brand ambassadors as part of their marketing strategy to promote their brand through online platforms, such as social media. Becoming a Pura Vida Brand Ambassador was a fairly easy process, although they have recently discontinued their Brand Ambassador Program. While you may no longer be able to become a Pura Vida Brand Ambassador, I still want to share my experience, as being a brand ambassador for any company comes with its own set of perks.
The Perks
Upon joining Pura Vida’s Brand Ambassador program, you receive a unique code that grants both yourself and anyone you share it with a 20% discount on online purchases. Additionally, for every purchase made using your code, you receive a 10% commission. This was just one of the many perks of being a Pura Vida Brand Ambassador.
Another enticing perk was the tier rewards. As soon as you made your first sale, Pura Vida would send you a complimentary gift. I remember receiving the first five original Pura Vida bracelets ever made and sold on their website. Once you reach a sales milestone (1 sale – Sand Status, 5 sales – Surf Status, 10 sales – Sea Status…), your ambassador dashboard status is updated to show the number of sales. For instance, after my first sale, my ambassador dashboard status changed to “Sand.” The tier rewards were a way to earn complimentary merchandise for promoting the company, sharing your code, and attracting new customers to their site.
In addition to the tier rewards, the Pura Vida Ambassador program featured a points-based reward system. Every month, there would be a new social challenge for each social media platform linked to your account. This allowed you to share a TikTok video or Instagram post/reel featuring Pura Vida merchandise, your unique code, and the specified hashtags. Completing each social challenge would earn you approximately 200-250 points, which could be redeemed for free jewelry via their points-based reward system. These perks were quite appealing and attainable through the Pura Vida Brand Ambassador program. The size of your network determined the potential for increased sales and commissions. After two years of being a Pura Vida Brand Ambassador, I was able to make a total of 15 sales, earning $43.32 in commission while promoting the Pura Vida movement on my TikTok and Instagram accounts.
Final Thoughts
For most brand ambassador programs, you must be at least 18 years old. Back in high school, I always envisioned myself becoming a brand ambassador for Pura Vida because I was obsessed with their jewelry. Their jewelry is affordable, made out of environment friendly materials, and does not tarnish over time. I decided to apply to be a brand ambassador on a whim. My experience as a Pura Vida Brand Ambassador was enjoyable. I liked creating a brand ambassador Instagram account and posting TikToks regularly to promote my code. I also liked receiving the free rewards and points. I highly recommend anyone interested in social media or marketing to consider becoming a brand ambassador for a company they are passionate about. It’s a cool feeling to say that I’ve represented one of my favorite companies as a brand ambassador.
